Welcome to the over 500 new subscribers in 2022. If you are new here, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser turned podcaster. I write this notebook on the most interesting things I have seen on the future of work, jobs, technology and politics.
Firstly, A big thank you to all of you for reading and subscribing to the notebook.
At the beginning of the year, we didn’t really have a newsletter. We occasionally sent out a summary of the podcast, but that wasn’t really very interesting.
Then we experimented with trying to write unique and insightful pieces each time, that created a lot of pressure for it to be a brilliant copy every single time.
But what I have learnt is that the beauty of Substack and writing without limits, is that sometimes you can use it to dive deep into an insight or an experience, and other times it can simply be a router for readers on interesting things we have seen around the internet. Since we started that mixed model, it has been much more consistent and more successful.
It is that old entrepreneur adage of you just need to keep trying, keep shipping different products and see what works. That is certainly a key takeaway that I have learnt over the last few years, you will try a lot of ideas and a lot will fail.
I have been inspired by how
and who have made Substack a central integration to their businesses and I began to learn that if we gave it more of a ‘notebook’ newspaper style feel it would relieve the pressure and be a lot more fun … it has been great to get to know them both as a result of writing more regularly. It was interesting to see a number of you at our meetup in Birmingham, a few confessed to not really listening to the podcast, but always reading the emails. It demonstrates just how many people want to consume content in different ways.
So thank you very much for engaging, we’ll be putting more effort into our Substack in 2023, you can always hit reply with what you do and don’t like, and ideas you think might work.
And 80% of our signups come from people forwarding it on, so if you would like to give me and the team an early Christmas gift, please do forward it to a friend.
🧨 2022 - What. A. Year ….
It has been a breakout year for Jimmy’s Jobs, we have had some incredible guests on the show, including Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss and Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England.
One of the things I that has surprised me most about this year is the launch of our TikTok and YouTube channels. It has been amazing to see the response to our content on these platforms, with over 5 million views on TikTok and 500k on YouTube.
At the beginning of the year, I was dismissive of TikTok, ‘it’s just teenagers dancing’, in reality getting a 45 min podcast into 60 seconds is a real skill, and one Gen Z are going to have in abundance. It is hard for corporates to know how to engage with these platforms and be authentic, it is almost impossible for them to do in a consistent way.
As we look ahead to the future, I am confident that together we can continue to explore and discuss the exciting and rapidly-evolving world of work. From new technologies and industries to changing job markets and career paths, there is so much to learn and discover.
I am excited to continue bringing you thought-provoking and informative content on the show and I hope you will continue to join me on this journey. You can always hit reply to these emails to give me your thoughts and ideas for future guests.
Highlight guests
Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss and Andrew Bailey were obviously huge highlights and it has been amazing to see how well some of our repurposed Rishi Sunak content has done. We had our first bite when he came on the show in January, a second bite during the leadership contest, and then by the time we got our third bite of the cherry when he became PM, we actually knew what we were doing.
This highlights reel of our interview with him is still getting a number of watches to this day:
But we equally enjoy being able to profile the next wave of entrepreneurs coming through that you may not have heard of, or their businesses may be well known but the stories behind them are not:
Lucy Minton at Kitt Offices, the company that's disrupting the workspace industry with their custom office designs that match unique business needs.
JP at All Plants, who raised a whopping £40 million from the same investors who backed Cazoo, Trustpilot, and Revolut.
Alex Depledge of Resi looking to spur the home renovation revolution (remember that was a key plank of how Tony Blair swept to power in 1997, wanting to be on the side of those wanting to expand)
Lydnsey Simpson, demonstrating you don’t need to be young to be an entrepreneur based in Shoreditch with rimmed glasses - she is changing work for the over 50s
Sarah Ellis the author of Squiggly Careers, and how ‘You Coach, you’
Sophie Adelman, founder of one unicorn, and now onto her next with The Garden
Ruth Handcock talking the importance of managing your money, how prescient to have recorded this in Q1, it regularly comes up as one of the most listened to of our back catalogue
Jeff Kofman - Trint - from war reporter to entrepreneur, really insightful episode as to how the media is changing.
And Matt Clifford, who is the new Chair of ARIA. and CEO of Entrepreneur First
We even road tested our first live event with Freddie Fforde who is building Patch, as somewhere to work between the home and the office (plenty more of that to come in 2023 ….)
⚡ And so to 2023
How do you top the year we just had? Well, there are a number of ways we are exploring.. Firstly, we are going to be partnering with FocalData to do some polling of the public around jobs and careers in 2023,
How satisfied are people in their job?
Do they think their roles will still exist in a year?
How important is WFH when negotiating that next role?
There’s a crack team working on the show and every episode costs us around two thousand pounds to produce, so our bar for quality content is ever increasing, and inevitably we have to find a way to fund this, so there is a big focus on partnerships.
We have already recorded an exciting partnership with the Scotch Whisky Association, where we took an in-depth look at all of the different jobs and careers within the industry. From distillery workers and blenders to marketing and tourism and hospitality, we explored the diverse range of roles that contribute to the success of this iconic industry. This will be released alongside Burns Night in the New Year.
If Scotch is one of the oldest industries, we will also look at the other end of the spectrum and we have agreed to have three episodes focused on the future of quantum computing with M2 lasers.
This cutting-edge technology has the potential to revolutionise fields ranging from medicine and finance to defense and transportation, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to delve into the exciting job opportunities that it will create.
In addition to these partner episodes, we will also continue to bring you solo episodes featuring expert guests from a wide range of fields. From data science and artificial intelligence to renewable energy and sustainability, we will be exploring the jobs and industries that are shaping the future of work.
We will also be continuing to work on ‘The Shift with Eliza Filby and Jimmy McLoughlin’ looking at future of work, economics and generational stories.
And there is a couple more shows under development too if you want to know about them, make sure you subscribe

Well this section is supposed to make you smile, and what better way of pointing out my own mistakes! I am going to include one of my pieces from this from May:
I speculated who the next leader of the Tory Party would be, but first describing Boris Johnson as more stable and secure in post than people think, I didn’t mention Liz Truss, but I did say Rishi Sunak was good value at 12/1
