Welcome to the 14 new subscribers. If you are new here, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser turned podcaster. I write this notebook on the most interesting things I have seen on the future of work, jobs, technology and politics.
Bit of a shorter note this week as we have been re purposing a lot of our Rishi Sunak content for our YouTube Channel you can check out all the different videos there.

Earlier this year I had an article in the Telegraph titled: ‘Get ready for more business chiefs going into politics’ where I outline that many business leaders have become more successful and younger than ever due to improvements in technology like the iPhone. Many like Ben Francis, Steven Bartlett , Dom McGregor have built substantial wealth by the age of 30 that they have no interest in retiring and playing golf for the next 50 years. So they may be tempted to explore politics and I think the creation of more Mayors allows a smoother transition path.
A great example of this is my friend Richard Walker, CEO of Iceland and someone who I bumped into recently at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham. Retail Gazette got the scoop that he was on the approved candidates list. The work that he has been doing at Iceland over the last few years has been striking, check out the palm oil campaign they ran:
This isn't his first dive into politics he’s been on Government’s business councils over the years to give his insight on the government's strategy for delivering growth. Even as a conservative, he has been outspoken on policy, being one of the first business leaders to speak out about the plans to scrap the 45p tax rate, calling it an “odd priority”.
I think a more common route will be for business leaders to become Mayors rather than MPs. We recently interviewed Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen who has been supporting businesses in his area and went from underdog candidate to the largest electoral mandate in the North of England. To check out his episode see below.
I wish Richard the very best of luck, the more business leaders going into politics, the better I say.

One of the most high profile business leaders to go into politics previously was Archie Norman, who was CEO of ASDA, he is now Chair of M&S.
He was a Conservative MP between 1997-2005, not exactly the high watermark of Tory politics.
He recently spoke about that experience on the excellent Business Studies podcast from Graham Ruddick.
