Welcome to the 12 new subscribers. If you are new here, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser turned podcaster. I write this notebook on the most interesting things I have seen on the future of work, jobs, technology and politics.
A shorter note this week, as I dare sit down and write for two hours as everything will have changed by the end of it!
Where will the Penny drop? 💰
This leadership contest has been like no other, with the truncated nature of it, it is moving at lightning speed.
Another difference is the mass of information and data out there and because the media all had a run at this just a couple of months ago has meant that they are hyper efficient at communicating.
So in a paradoxical way, it’s never been clearer to see what is happening in real time. However, the mass of information means if you only have a fleeting interest / knowledge of politics, it makes it harder to keep up.
Guido Fawkes has become indispensable in the last 72 hours with their tracker. His website had over 750,000 hits last weekend, which has left me wondering who has made up the other the half a million aside from myself.
As you prepare your Sunday lunch, I believe there is one question that now decides this contest, and possibly means it is wrapped up in the next 24-36 hours.
Sunak will make the list, Johnson’s team say they have 100 backers, so he should make the list.
So really this leaves one question, where will the Penny (Mordaunt) drop? At the moment, it seems unlikely she can make the threshold of 100 MPs, despite an incredibly impressive launch video
A big call to make, she backed Hunt over Johnson in 2019, and Truss over Sunak this summer (and was relatively early to do that as well).
🎥 Rishi Sunak on mental health and being a parent
We interviewed Rishi Sunak a couple of times in the last year, and so have been re-purposing some of his most interesting answers. In the content creation world, this is called recycling content, something which I have taken some getting used to doing.
The one from the beginning of the year was described by a number of political editors at the time as being one of the most revealing interview he has ever done.
Here is a clip of him talking about mental health, his advice on being a parent, industries of the future, and how Government needs to be better at evaluating at what it does.
As an aside, we only have 300 subscribers on YouTube, which is about 1% of our total subs across all podcast platforms.
I am very grateful to the team behind Jimmy’s Jobs who have worked super hard over the last few days, across YouTube and TikTok we have now had close to 200k views over the last few days.
⚡ London’s bright new spark: Battersea
Last week in the recording of ‘The Shift with Eliza Filby’, we discussed how New York City was perhaps the ultimate the 20th Century city and does not meet the needs of what new residents need,, its focus on public health, access to green spaces may hold it back. The episode is on iTunes here.
Well step forward the re developed Battersea Power Station, it is simply stunning and a magnificent example of regeneration, see my tweet below from my visit yesterday.
The kids had a super time watching all the transport, I even stopped reloading the Guido Fawkes tracker for a while!
Also, Tim Cook of Apple unveiled what their office will be looking at the site here. You can read about when Tim Cook came to see Theresa May to discuss the new office in a previous Substack from last month below.
♞ Queen’s Gambit
Just a quick note, we binge watched this on Netflix last weekend and loved it and now have a real hankering to place Chess again, which shows how modern culture can support some of the oldest traditions.
Next week, I am going reviewing Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s new Parenting Hell book, which is a spin off from their chart topping podcast, I am half way through and it is **really** good.
