If you are new here, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser turned podcaster. I write this notebook on the most interesting things I have seen on the future of work, jobs, technology and politics.
Apologies for the delay in writing. We have added a number of production assistants to increase capacity and it has taken time to bed down.
What to do after the most powerful job in the world?
Jared Cohen is an remarkable individual, he is the Head of Global Affairs at Goldman Sachs, prior to this he was Head of Idea’s at Google and he has a side hustle of writing books on Presidents.
His latest book is ‘Life After Power: Seven Presidents and Their Search for Purpose Beyond the White House’
We sat down with him to discuss everything from starting his career as an adviser to Hilary Clinton and knowing Zelensky before the War and how his view of him has changed.
Key moments:
4:53 - William Taft’s Story from US President to the Supreme Court.
9:48 - Leaving Google for Goldman Sachs
22:33 - Are We Entering a New Cold War?
27:58 - Cohen on meeting Zelensky before and after the war.
31:41 - Persuading talented people to go into public office
45:56 - George W Bush and his transition to artist
50:28 - How is Britain viewed from a global perspective
1:02:02 - Favourite piece of Presidential memorabilia?
1:04:50 - If You Were 24 in 2024, What Would You Be Looking at to Start Your Career?
It made me think about what British PMs do next and what Sunak might do.
If Sunak leaves office this year, he will just be 43 years old, he is unlikely to need to need to put ‘hay in the loft’ like other former PMs.
Could he start an University like Thomas Jefferson? Will he take up a creative hobby like George W. Bush?
I explored some of the options that might be available to him in my latest column in City AM.
Running across Africa
Running has been in boom since the pandemic, after all for a long time it was the only exercise we could do. I have also found it a very efficient way of exercising with three kids under 4.
But one Russ Cook took it a bit further …..
Cook has returned from running the length of Africa - a whopping 9,940 miles- over the span of 352 days. Makes you think why he didn’t do another 60 miles to reach the 10k miles mark.
What struck me when watching the videos were all the jobs behind him, all the people that accompanied him on the way. Planning, logistics, videoing and editing
Starting a year ago today, Russ faced a range of trials from being robbed at gunpoint in Angola, issues with his visa, to being threatened with machetes in the Republic of Congo.
Cook as of this morning just passed the £1 million mark for two charities, the Running Charity and Sandblast.
Interesting Roles
There are some amazing open positions for roles as in public appointee - everything from the new football regulator to InnovateUK Chair.
Independent Football Regulator - Chair
And another interesting job that caught my eye this week was the Royal Household are looking for a Digital Learning Adviser
Derby County Update
On the topic of football, I know many will be keen for a Derby County update.
Well, the good news is that less than two years after we stood on the verge of liquidation, we should return to the championship (the second tier of the pyramid) as long as we can avoid defeat to the bottom of the table Carlisle …. It couldn’t, could it?
Podcast recommendation - Heroes and Humans of Football
