The new paper-round salary? 🗞️🗞️
How will the next generation earn their first money?
George Clooney buying Derby County?
Who should we interview in Season 5 and 6?
Podcast of the week
What was the first thing you did to earn money? Was it pouring drinks? Or did your parents sling you money for odd jobs and keeping your room tidy? Or were you even a paper boy or paper girl?
Herman Narula of Improbable made the observation for that the generation coming through now, they are going to be earning their first pounds and pence online.
It was a statement of the obvious, but it made me think a lot …
Part of my job for the Prime Minister in Downing Street, was to act as a ‘horizon scanner’ of the most interesting companies and sectors out there.
We would then engage with them and see what support they needed, could we take them on trade trips to China or Africa etc?
Out of all the entrepreneurs that met, Herman Narula was one of the most inspiring, the conversations that I had with him were of mind bending proportions …
It was 2016, and he was already talking about Web3 / Metaverse and NFTs …
He went onto raise over half a billion from Softbank, a truly staggering amount of money.
We wanted to finish Season Four with a bang and it has certainly done that.
If you are receiving this for the first time, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser on business & entrepreneurship who now runs a podcast about the future of our economy through the prism of jobs.
I want people to feel inspired about the future of our economy and the jobs that are going to be created, If you think someone would find this interesting, I’d really love for you to forward to a friend. 👇👇
George Clooney is a Ram …
I’ll be honest, that is not a sentence that I thought I would find myself writing.
I believe one day a film will be made about this period in Derby County’s history, it is a sad and desperate time for a lot of fans as the issue around ownership has still not been solved, and we are on the verge of relegation on the pitch.
With the overspending of the last few years, there has been an element of Derby County goes to Hollywood, with glam signings like Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney, who between them have 333 England Caps 🏴. 🎩
Now The Sun has reported that actually Hollywood may come to Derby, with George Clooney contemplating a bid …
Unfortunately, it is a load of BS, Clooney gave an interview to Nathan Fearn in Derbyshire Life saying how he was a supporter of the club through his friendship with fellow actor Jack O’Connell … but that is as far as it goes.
A good example of the mantra don’t believe everything you read in the papers, but still it made me smile … and all Derby fans could do with that at the moment.
Season five planning
Quite a lot of forward planning goes into a podcast (forward planning really is a bizarre phrase isn’t it? Who would do backwards planning … I digress)
So with Season 4 safely boxed up, we are onto planning Series 5 …
We have an incredible guest to kick off with … Season three we had Ben Francis of Gymshark, Season four we had Rishi Sunak …
We’ll exclusively reveal who that guest is on this substack, so please do consider forwarding to a friend or colleague … and make sure you are subscribed.
And who would you like to hear from? We do around 12 episodes a series, and we have got 7 episodes lined up already, but please do send us ideas of companies that you think we might not have heard of yet … bonus points as always for female founders / companies based in the regions of the UK.
Podcast of the week
When I recommend a podcast, I try to give a specific episode and this time it is Matt Forde with Tom Tugendhat on the Political Party.
Two of my favourite people, who in an hour cover a huge amount of ground from the state of the Conservative Party and to the new global order.
