🏛️ Former No.10 people do interesting things
Welcome to the 7 new subscribers. If you are new here, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser turned podcaster. I write this notebook on the most interesting things I have seen on the future of work, jobs, technology and politics.
⚽Simon Kuper - The economics of the World Cup
I have never been more underwhelmed at the start of a world cup, the November kick off, all the troubles surrounding the host nation, human rights to migrant workers and topped off by the fact England’s opening match is a Monday lunchtime. I haven’t played Three Lions once yet …
However, the business and economics of it fascinates me as ever and I was thrilled to have one of my favourite authors of all time, Simon Kuper, on the podcast to talk about all things football and his latest installment of Soccernomics. My first dream job was to be a football journalist. Of course I wanted to be a footballer, but that was thwarted by having a rugby player physique.
One of the best books I have ever read was Soccernomics. In 2011 social media was quite nascent compared to the always-connected world we live in today and so I didn’t stay in touch with as much of Simon’s work as I could have.
So when I visited
, our recent guest and bookstore owner in Balham, he recommended Barca by Simon and I got back into his style of writing all over again. I wrote a review on Barca back in August here.On the podcast, we discuss:
the significance of Qatar hosting the world cup
how Barca has over 500 non-playing staff
jobs of the future in football as they become content and media businesses
the republishing of Soccernomics and the changes in the economics of football since he first wrote the book a decade ago
how social media is impacting clubs and players
the first billion-pound player
when will we see the first female manager
why we overstate the importance of managers more generally
why data is overrated
and of course, who is the GOAT; Messi or Ronaldo
Here is some highlights on YouTube.
🎙️Business studies podcast
Speaking of
his new podcast launched in September and has already had some notable guests so I was thrilled to be invited on and be on the other side of the table for once.He is also a fellow substacker and is a truly gifted writer with his Sunday press review being a must-read. When he worked at the Times as deputy business editor he helped me by encouraging me to talk about creative topics.
I used to pitch him ideas and he always would go for the most wildcard one - saying ‘that sounds the most interesting’ then I’d realise ‘oh crumbs now I need to go and actually write about it!’.
We recorded the podcast while Liz Truss was PM and it was published when Rishi was already in office - such is the pace of politics these days.
It is recorded though in an evergreen style, so it should make for relevant listening even in a few years times on how business and politics interacts.

📈Only brave people bet against Elon - Twitter
When isn't Elon in the news?
He has told employees they need to work hard or leave the company, this kind of culture is much easier to create when starting a company, it is much harder to implement it at breakneck speed within one. He does enjoy cultivating ‘us against the world strategy’. The Jose Mourinho of the business world perhaps …
There is a big question as to why he purchased Twitter at all? His past companies have focused on furthering the human race and tackling some of our biggest problems - flying to Mars and electric cars. Nevertheless, as a Twitter obsessive, I'm looking forward to what he does with it. In my opinion, it is the business story of the decade and I speak about the impact on the latest version of The Shift below.
Twitter has a unique position in the ecosystem, as explained in our recent interview with one of the (now Ex) directors of twitter, Martha Lane Fox. She spoke about how Twitter is like a town hall where politicians and journalists share their stories and the outside media picks it up - but the user base of Twitter is actually smaller than even Snapchat.
The BBC did an interesting documentary profiling Elon Musk which I thought was a great watch in uncovering some of the nuances behind how the world's most successful entrepreneur works.

🏛️ Former No.10 people do interesting things
I regularly write about the different options people have when leaving No.10, and it is great to see two new initiatives being launched by former Boris Johnson advisers.
Munira Mirza who was the Head of the Policy Unit is setting up a new initiative called Civic Future which is aiming to get more talented people into public service. It is a crucial endeavour and for my mind one of the biggest overarching challenges facing the western world in the 21st Century.
You can find more information here.
Sam Richards, another former No.10 staffer is launching a campaign focused on economic growth. More details below
