Good afternoon all, I hope you have managed to take a break over the summer months, it has very much felt like that the UK has adopted a more European feel this summer.
Early September is one of my favourite times of year, five years ago I got married and four years ago our eldest daughter arrived.
And our third daughter is arriving later this year ….
Therefore, we have been cramming quite a bit over the summer months.
We spent two days in the North East of England exploring their economy, the local technology ecosystem employs 27,000 people there and we discovered some gems of companies that we will be profiling.
We’ll be producing a substack on our report as well.
If you know people that are from / interested in the North East economy, please forward them this email so they can know when the episode comes out.
🔫 New Defence Secretary
Been a big week for JJ guest alum, including a new job for Grant Shapps. When we interviewed Grant in February, he was reshuffled about three hours after we finished recording from business to the energy and net zero brief.
He has been shuffled again now to defence, which is one of the most prized jobs for Conservative MPs. There was lots in our interview with him that was a broader profile piece, so we recut it last night, or as people at YouTube tell me the term is ‘reskinned’:
🎙️ Future guests
Speaking of YouTube, we have the UK MD, Alison Lomax coming on Jimmy’s Jobs to answer questions about working at YouTube and their overall impact on the creator economy, a subject I have long been fascinated by.
We also have Jonny Reynolds, the shadow secretary of state for business coming on the podcast in the next couple of weeks too.
He is also a Greater Manchester MP, Stalybridge and Hyde is his patch.
We love hearing your questions, so do hit reply to this email or drop us a line.
And make sure you don’t miss when the episodes come out:
🗞️ The power of local journalism
Twenty years ago I ‘started’ my career in local journalism. Well Radio Derby and Derby Evening Telegraph, let a very enthusiastic 16 year old tag along - I doubt they could have done much to stop me in fairness.
And I adored the experience, the feeling of being at the heart of something, of seeing things happen up close and beginning to understand how the world interlocked.
Then there was the thrill of seeing something you worked on appear in the press or on the airwaves.
But above all there were the people, the characters in the stories, the journalists and the readers.
I’ve watched the paradox over the last two decades, of how our news has got bigger and faster, whilst at the time local news has become slower and weaker.
I’ve watched what Joshi Hermann has built at Manchester Mill and been so impressed, they have now expanded to Sheffield and to Liverpool.
Combining traditional journalism technique with new tools like substack.
They have this week announced they have raised £350k from private investors at a £1.75 million valuation, I should declare an interest - I am a small angel investor.
They are going to use that money to expand the commercial side and look to expand to other cities in the UK. There are several on the horizon.
I would say this, but I would encourage you to watch the first few minutes of our interview below with Joshi below.
They are looking at hiring across the board, including writers, editorial and commercial side. More information here.
Here is one of my favourite pieces they wrote on who had benefitted Manchester growth, the jobs analysis was superb:
And here is a link to the Sheffield Tribune:
And the Liverpool Post:
These media publications, including this one really do grow through word of mouth, so please do forward to people who you think might find it relevant.
