2023 Job Market: 4 in ten people are likely to move | 1 in 10 expect their job to not exist by end of the year - exclusive polling
Happy New Year and welcome to this special edition of the notebook.
If you are new here, my name is Jimmy McLoughlin, a former Downing Street adviser turned podcaster. I write this notebook on the most interesting things I have seen on the future of work, jobs, technology and politics.
With perfect timing as Rishi Sunak gives a speech on the importance of maths and data to the future of our careers in the UK, we have undertaken some of our own polling with the company focaldata on how the UK job market may look through 2023.
One of the thing that has fascinated me about recent recessions and is that jobs numbers have continued to remain buoyant throughout them, often bucking the overall trend. When you throw in the pandemic and Brexit to boot it is an even greater challenge for economists to figure out what is going on in the 21st Century labour market.
One of the things that would frustrate me sometimes in the Brexit debate would be a company or an institution saying ‘we will need to move 600 workers / employees to xxx’, seemingly forgetting that those 600 people were individual actors in their own right and not some sort of an infantry batallion that could be deployed at will to different countries.
It turns out that 55% of UK workers would not be willing to move town / city for a better job opportunity, let alone move country for the same one.
So this is why we are working with focaldata to examine what employees think is happening in the job market and the results are fascinating, but then I think anything to do with jobs / employment / future of work is interesting.
Here is the press release which is being sent out this afternoon including key datapoints:
Survey data from Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future podcast highlights what employees think about their employment prospects this year
More than 4 in 10 Britons are likely to change their job this year, with almost 1 in 10 believing their job may not exist by the end of 2023, it has been revealed in new data released today by Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future.
The exclusive poll of over 1000 people was conducted by FocalData between 20th-21st December 2022.
Below are its key findings for what employees want in 2023
1 in 5 cited the ability to work flexibly and the opportunity to work from home.
This compares to 2 in 5 who cited a higher salary / income as their primary preference for moving jobs.
Whilst many firms have bought into a better company culture and promote their ‘purpose’ credentials, only 7% of respondents say it would be their primary reason for changing jobs ….
Other points:
Almost 11 in 20 Britons said they would not be prepared to relocate to a new town or city for a better job opportunity.
And over 8 in 10 Britons are not aware of chat GPT-3, recently launched by OpenAI
Commenting on the results of the survey, former No10 Advisor and ‘Jimmy’s Jobs’ founder and host Jimmy McLoughlin OBE said:
“This survey commissioned by Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future with FocalData provides a fascinating insight into the future of the jobs market in 2023. Almost half of the respondents are likely to change their job this year, and 1 in 10 believe their job may not exist by the end of this year.
“This demonstrates both that employees can see the job market contracting, but also that increasing automation and AI is going to impact jobs.
It is striking that although individuals are looking for new jobs, the vast majority would not be prepared to ‘up sticks’ and relocate to a new location for employment. After 2+ years of unpredictability due to the pandemic, it seems as if employees are looking for stability and are not prepared to take a huge risk in their careers.
And flexible working is a key factor that is being considered by employees, with 20% selecting this as a decision maker in their next career move. The government recently announced changes to employment law, giving employees a greater say on requesting flexible working.
Jimmy’s Jobs of the Future is dedicated to helping people understand and discover the exciting roles being created by business leaders and entrepreneurs and how they are shaping the future of work. This survey is just part one of a series looking at the future of work in 2023.”
